CHARACTER INFO.
✖ Character Name: July
✖ Canon: Darker Than Black - Just after episode 16 of the first season
✖ Character Appearance: July with Novemer and April and July on his own
✖ Character Age: Around 11 or 12
✖ Pick A Number: 043 or 114
✖ Canon Setting: Set in an alternate universe of Earth, Darker than Black tells the story of a world where people with powers known as Contractors are said to exist. They appeared ten years ago when two gates appeared: Heaven's Gate and Hell's Gate. These showed up in North America and Tokyo respectively and awakened powers in some people who were then connected to fake stars in the skies. These people could do incredible things but always at a price...a rumeration. Some of these were not terrible, decorate a living room after using the power. Others would require one to self harm or perhaps even drink the blood of babies instead.
The Heaven's War brought about the destruction of the Heaven's Gate and the fall of power for North America. The series takes place ten years after this in the modern world of Tokyo where Contractors are kept hidden from the general public. Some have been recruited for their amazing powers and some may not even be aware they have them yet. Whatever the case, Dolls are used to find them and keep track of them, allowing for orders to be given out to neutralize the dangerous ones.
There is a mysterious group known as the Syndicate that is now calling the shots from the shadows. BK-201 is one of these members and has been rather active lately causing interesting things to follow and even organizations like the MI6 to take an interest in the happenings of Tokyo since some occurrences are more unique than others and there is an uprising of a group known as EPR who are stirring things up and possibly leading things to another war.
In this world, July is a Doll. The exact origins of Dolls is unknown but it is implied they were once humans who were then reprogrammed to be able to send out their spirits upon objects that they have a connection with in order to spy on people. In July's case, this object is what anyone would consider to be glass. His real name is unknown and the MI6 have given him the codename July to go with his group of April and November 11th. He is an important member, able to provide them with intelligence others might not be able to obtain. With his partners, he travels to Tokyo to investigate what has been going on since it could be a matter that impacts the entire world.
✖ Character History:
A series wiki and a character wiki
✖ Character Personality: As a Doll, he is one who doesn't show emotion and is meant to "mimic" a human. He looks human, can eat, wears a coat in the cold, things a human normally would do. However, he isn't necessarily supposed to be capable of making these decisions himself. In fact, he requires someone else to pull him out of danger and to make sure that he is well fed and sheltered from a chill. Without someone to do that, to hold his hand and guide him through things, he will just sit or stand somewhere until he's given an order to do otherwise. This is not to say he can't act on his own since he is seen going to get help for November when he was in trouble, making tea for people, things like that. It's more that if he clearly has nothing to do, he may not go and find himself something to do because he requires no actual entertainment to prevent boredom.
His face is not capable of showing emotion so he cannot smile or cry or frown. The only way he is capable of doing this is if he moves his own face with his hands to make the imitation. With that said, unless someone else tells him to do it, he won't actually think to do it himself. Emotions are not essential so he really has no need to consider using them. His mind is based in logic as far as he is aware which means he would much rather focus upon facts than any other detail.
With that said, there are some irregularities to July's personalities. After all he is meant to be emotionless with only an ability to look like a human. However, he has shown signs of affection for people on a couple of occasions and a desire to be with those people and to protect them. These are all very unusual for a Doll and things that surprise people who happen to witness them. He doesn't react to this though, not at all realizing that he is a Doll that is evolving very slowly to have some emotion. Therefore, he will say something like calling someone a friend but there will be a disconnect between him and what is said. It's almost as if the emotional side and the logical side haven't quite made contact just yet.
Now, it should be noted that his change is not rapid. He will not suddenly start smiling or laughing. But, there are some little signs in there that show he is not simply letting others control his every bit of existence. There is some free will to be found in there. This can cause him to act upon it and actually make him quite the useful ally.
Some people that July has shown affection for are his team and Misaki. With the latter, he has actually gone so far as to wave to her when leaving, something unusual for a Doll but a possible sign that he happens to like her enough to want to say farewell. But, the most affection he seems to have is for his team. Though he doesn't act upon these emotions dwelling within him, he does feel them and it becomes clear that he cares about them when he calls them his friends, his comrades. They are not just a team to him and it's possible he considers them to be a family of sorts.
Because of this affection for his team, he claims that he keeps track of them. Based upon this statement, it's rather clear that this wasn't an order from above and more July deciding that he wanted to know where his friends were. This surprises Misaki and November 11 but he thinks nothing of it. He simply keeps track of them in order to aid in their safety and recovery. Of course, he also is a key component to November 11 taking down Maki, keeping him away from attacks and ultimately getting revenge for the attack upon April. This is done before November even requests it of him, July simply stepping up to the plate and tugging on his sleeve to let him know that there is danger ahead and telling him the best way to fight. Not only that but he gets Misaki to help him save November 11 when the man is captured by the EPR.
These instances are only subtle moments of emotion inside him but they are all significant. Dolls are not programmed to show emotion and are not programmed to act on their own. The fact that he has to any degree is important to take note of. It's true that he still can't show those emotions physically and that he really isn't capable of taking care of himself without an order to do so but the fact that he can even do this much is amazing. After all, other Dolls would never have had the foresight to step up to the plate and seek out help for friends or even to provide an early warning system. They certainly would never consider anyone friend or family.
What is also special about him though is that he focuses heavily on the people he cares about. He is far more likely to follow an order made by November than he is someone he just met. On that note, it is suggested that he may not actually follow the order of someone he just met without establishing that they are safe. Whether or not this is actually true is unclear but it seems that it could be likely. Now, this also doesn't mean it's always true either. He is capable of making some decisions on his own (as pointed out earlier) but he may go along with it as his programming suggests. The fact remains that he will certainly listen to those he cares about first as a rule.
July is a Doll designed to look like a young boy, someone that others wouldn't give a second look to. He can be a key ally and it seems he has been programmed to be touching glass whenever he can in order to look around the world and know what is going on. This isn't something that is difficult all things considered so he is usually near glass of some kind. He will never complain about this or anything at all. He does as he is told, holding the hand of the person who is taking care of him and is typically found near them, watching over them.
✖ Character Powers: July is not physically strong and requires others to take care of him since he is not programmed to do so himself. With that said, he can be a great ally to another person because he has excellent perception abilities as well as a perfect directional sense. He can also spy on others when he has contact with glass, able to see where others are so long as there is glass/glass-like nearby them. Only a Contractor can see his observational spirit but this spirit can travel from glass to glass to watch people and aid him in locating them. He is even able to calculate exactly how far away another person is just by connecting to that other piece of glass.
This power is limited to within the expanse of a large city. He is not able to jump to another glass-like object on another planet or in another city. It would not be as useful to him there. He is also able to gather information from doing this far faster if whatever it is happens to be closer to him. For example if he is looking into the next room then he will see what it is almost instantly. However, if he is looking several kilometers away then it may take a number of seconds before he focuses on what he's looking for and is able to relay that information back to his body. He is also programmed to understand all human languages and dialects since he is able to go to several countries during the course of the series and can understand every person around him. Plus, he has a photographic memory as well as a perfect audio memory. Though he may not share all the information he gathers, he remembers everything down to the last detail.
Aside from this, he is programmed to follow any order. Obviously as he evolves this isn't necessarily something that will be consistent but he does believe he will follow any order he is given. Limits to this involve those he has come to care about without realizing it. He is not likely to want to bring them harm and far more likely to listen to them over anyone else. Though this seems more a personality trait, it is actually essential to his powers. After all, he isn't really that likely to defend himself, to run away, to even use his powers, unless someone tells him to do so.
CHARACTER SAMPLES.
✖ First Person POV:
Link 1: July arrives at the game Polychromatic where people try to help him out and someone known as Mad Hatter takes him in.
Link 2: An event at Polychromatic causes streamers to explode out of the sink and they cover July in the process.
✖ Third Person POV: He'd witnessed their arrival long before they got to him on window panes in the city. July had waited for them to approach, aware that they were coming for him as soon as they intentionally headed his direction. Their purpose was unknown to him and yet he could see they were not hostile. Did that actually matter though? He couldn't say but he still waited, alone for a change since April had needed to go buy more alcohol and November was peacefully on the roof smoking. Those were their rumerations, necessary 'evils' as he'd heard it called once. When one was a Contractor, one had to do these things after using their powers.
Dolls were different. They required no such 'evil' to do what they did. They were made to witness and giving them such a consequence wouldn't be beneficial to the cause. Rather, they just removed their emotions instead. It was a far more useful thing in the end. Remove the emotions and they wouldn't act on their own.
July was special though, more so than he even realized. When the people arrived, he stared at them as they stared at him. They were dressed in clothes he did not recognize, styles rather unique. Uniforms. Yes, that was what they were. Little was said between them as he studied them, eyes devoid of curiosity and merely taking in all the data the situation had to provide. It all came to one very important conclusion that was unavoidable. They were not from this world.
How did he reach this conclusion? It was quite the jump and likely wouldn't make sense to some. However, he was able to take into account that they had just arrived, that their clothes didn't belong, and that they had known right where he was into consideration. They were not from this world and they had come for him for some purpose. What it was, he couldn't say but he was already considering the various scenarios before him.
Refusal.
He could refuse and they would depart. He would never have to speak about them and it would be as if they had never existed in the first place. He could also refuse and they could kidnap him to join their mysterious cause. There would be no choice and no guarantee he would ever return home... Wait, was this his home? His mind paused a moment to consider the definition of this word before he moved on past this when he had his answer. Yes, this was his home.
Agreement.
He could agree and they would depart with him. He would not be aware of when he would return but he would learn of the cause in detail. Wherever they took him, he would aid in it until the task was done. Then he would be returned home with or without some kind of reward for his service. It would be that or he would not be allowed to return home because they would require him for yet another task.
There were positives and negatives to both situations and he knew there was no time to ask the Contractors for permission. The situation was unique since he had to make the choice.
“You require me.”
Simple. Obvious. To the point. He watched the nod and then stood from his chair. In his hands was a small compact that April had left with him so he would have easy access to glass should something happen. It was convenient now, though he was certain that she had no given it to him for this purpose.
A Doll was never created to act on its own but this time...
“I will come.”
This time he did. He walked to them and he went with them. He could gather information this way to assess if they were a danger to his comrades. It would be useful for the future should these people decide that Earth was a target. July hadn't even realized he was making such an advanced decision on his own, focused too much on the logic of it instead. Gather information on a potential enemy then return home to share it.
It was the logical thing to do.
